had to laugh reading for the umpteenth time JL`s checklist of terminal traits a maternal cow or bull must possess...and am reminded of Gavin`s law...progress is slowed by the square of the number of traits selected for...no wonder those who know maternal; and select for maternal first have superior cows to those wanting to be all things to all people; linebacker cattle...the linebacker is weaker than a defensive end; and slower than a wide receiver...a team of complimentary parts is most always a winning combination...

I tend to think that the consequences of our selections are recorded accurately in our type ...

the primary reason I believe the Angus sire summary to have a fair degree of accuracy...the Angus muscle cattle look like Charolais except for color; the marbling cattle favor Wagyu type {and color}, the high milk Angus look like Holstein, and the little fat, square cattle are the type in any breed that Bonsma raged against because of fertility; and it was right on...
but do any of the Angus types alone offer greater production efficiency for the desired end result than the other breeds that already exist? an inherent little I believe ;but not enough...it takes a system of complimentary types ...
seems another 6 inches snow coming this way; not good picture weather...too much mud; too little area at this time of year...it`s paid the bills; like cattle type; a farm or region can`t be best at all things...

Life is funny. Had a guy to come by and look at a bull the other week. He told me several times that he had "big cows" and this bull was just not going to be tall enough, he did not think. After I talked with him I realized and successfully encouraged him out of buying: he wanted terminal only. This bull was not a fit to his plans. One of the final waves of conversation was, again, about his big cows. "Some of them will go nearly 1300." I had to laugh because the granddam weighed about 1425 and the dam weighed about 1375 on the last run across the scales.

I fail to see where this high $B bull is ruining the Angus breed?

http://superiorlivestock.com/onlineVideoCatalog/?contractId=1318&lot=7#lot

he might ruin a cowherd; and corn might have ruined the bull...but the breed? some of these mouths must be too young to remember how totally worthless most 50`s; 60`s Angus had become for the changing paradigm from grass raised to corn/feedlots......

hmmm....could Warren Buffet`s stock purchasing criteria apply to bull buying? 5 of 6 might...

(2) Demonstrated consistent earning power (future projections are of no interest to us, nor are “turnaround” situations)

(3) Businesses earning good returns on equity while employing little or no debt,

(4) Management in place (we can’t supply it),

(5) Simple businesses (if there’s lots of technology, we won’t understand it),

(6) An offering price (we don’t want to waste our time or that of the seller by talking, even preliminarily, about a transaction when price is unknown).

well, with OT refusing to use his new password to post, the weather report falls to me ...currently a white out here at home; looks like a new 3 inches out there; central Ky reporting as much as 20 inches new; 21 degrees; low tonight 7 ...today`s high in Ocala will be 84; and why I`m not there must surely be the dumbest of all reasons....but not as dumb as having the first heifer to calve yesterday...
here`s to Adventure; cheers because I no longer feel any Romance in it... Evil or Very Mad

Tom, I determined yesterday that humans are the only animals on earth that think winter is a good time to have babies...found a little inbred calf yesterday morning; in the barn shed of their accord; lively, born before the snow...Briann`s natural selection program Smile ; had not checked cows for a couple days

Ole Miss band helps out

The top assist for the tournament might go to the band members from Ole Miss who stuck around to fill in for the Kentucky band, which was unable to get to Little Rock because of bad weather.

The Rebels’ band director donned a UK hat and the members worked on learning the Kentucky fight song and a version of the C-A-T-S cheer before the game.

Ole Miss was knocked out of the tournament by Arkansas on Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels’ effort wasn’t lost on the Kentucky players, who went over and thanked the band after the game, also autographing the UK baseball cap that the director was wearing after the win

Not necessarily so. As a child I hated the winter cold-having to go out and chore in the middle of it all. Now, I rather enjoy it. The summers here in Kansas are worse, in my perception, than the winter. You cannot dress down enough to be comfortable in 105+ heat...and we get plenty of that here. The cold-you can dress up for. We love bundling up in the middle of a blizzard-10 degrees, horizontal snow with 30+ mph wind and taking a hike to see what is happening out there. Hiking along the creek with the wind howling overhead and the snow drifting down through the trees-out of the roaring storm, is really cool.

Not that I will not enjoy the 80 degree weather of Phoenix-when our Hesston College softball heads that way tomorrow.

BUSY PHONE DAY...

Tom Stone from Iowa checks in today...sold steers yesterday; the heaviest cut of April 20 average calves weighed 836 and brought $1.99 with the order buyer comment "damn good calves"...wow; what a comment; coming from out there in Iowa where the sky is always near falling on those with no epds, dna, angus source, or even a registration paper...
ask Tom if he needs a bull this year..."nahhhh, keeping a couple of his own from 15 and 16 year old never miss owns...I gotta be more careful about advising folks to use their own bulls to create their OWN cows...  Very Happy

Joe Trumbo`s March steer calves average 790 across all of them and bring $2.04 a couple weeks ago in Lexington ...need another calving ease bull to match the one he has...at 77, Joe don`t want problems; enough already...
nothing beyond making the complicated simple...and people happy ...

and a call from the past who bought a bunch of old cows several years ago...wants more; says they served him well...said he didn`t want any damn papers; last time I remember he did; just value this time... cheers

and a call from the future...always  enjoyable answering for example {perhaps more accurate to say "giving an opinion"} on maintaining a line; both at the genetic supplier level; and at the commercial user/producer level... enjoyable stuff; having to think...

more good news...other good MO friends going to be at The Great Lakes Gathering if at all possible  cheers

Progress...

if epd`s are not a part of maternal selection as suggested by newsletter`s floating around, why do the critics continue to create and publish epds?

if certain cattle are so consistent and renewable, is that a reason for them to sell higher...or cheaper?

why all the congratulations for having a high registered sale average? wasn`t that at the commercial producer`s expense? was the congratulations for the genetics; which were the same before the sale as after; or for pulling off the con of selling stock for more than they were wort?h

Local tornado drills here today. Sit in the hall with an open book over your head as if osmosis will get some of the pages into your brain before you blow away. They would be better to open road maps over their heads, to absorb, so that where they land they would know how to get home. No tornado drill here: bush hog post hole digger is enough drill for me.

To NOT select for maternal traits?

To make more ... or less money

thought I`d let you folks proof my next ad in Cow Country News...

I took particular notice that the community organizer`s beef cattle herd was going to; quote" AI all the cows this year to improve the quality of the genetics in the herd". Believing  that the source of these "improved genetics" was likely the AI studs with the rarest  and highest numbers, I began an immediate search for the new and improved grasses that were growing on the UK Eden Shale farm that would match the nutritional requirements of these genetics...but alas, the only new grass I found possibility suited for these steep, thin hills was an improved version of the same old fescue...still very inadequate to meet the feed demands of cattle bred for high energy feedlots. While I am never looking to change the basic cow that for 50 years has best converted grass to production and reproduction of pounds of calf, I am always interested in running more of those type cows on fewer acres, cheaper; but once again it appears that the stated notion of improving genetics is little more than registered fads changing and  calling it improvement.

I do occasionally read breeder proclamations that these new numbered cows of greater growth and milk production are running on the same feed as always; and if that be true, then surely these  computer deduced calculations are nothing more than a farce; a registered bureaucratic creation to promote rarity on paper when none exists across the scale in the real world...reports from our customers are adding some validity to this theory.

Whether it be fact with feed; or fiction with fantasy, doesn`t change anything here....we know that the first step to improving cattle for the long haul is to get over the Great Bull Syndrome...for many years now we`ve read our bank statements closer than we have the Angus Journal; if that kind of priority appeals to you; give us a call.
