So not only am I intellectually challenged, I'm technically challenged For some reason I can't reset the link so it works.

It's not Blacketless Boothel it's Blacketlees - thats what I chose to call our farm here, named after what was the old family farm in Scotland for @300 years. Did the Laird kick you guys out like the Laird did to my Great, Great, Great Great Grandfather's family (and pack them off to Northern Ireland) except you guys were exiled to Canada?

No, the land was all bought from the estate in my Grandfathers time, paid for by unbelievable hard work and tennants ingenuity. My Dad went out on his own and built the landbase that I sold to move to Canada. My Uncle and cousin kept the "home" place and my cousin wasn't much of a farmer or at least he preferred doing other things so it was sold off in bits and pieces. An outside guy bought the house and renovated it beautifully but now they can't sell it in the house price "slump" over there.

So what is a blacketlees? Does it mean something?

And you still haven't told me what a rastas is either?

Beautiful place... If we get a repeat of the winter we had last year I might have to call him and see if he wants to deal ...

Sorry Boot don't know what it means - most of the old place names there were either named after a geographic feature or names of former inhabitants.
Rastas meant the rastafarian hair stye - as in cows with long hair - mine specifically.
You've really got to keep up Boothheel - if you can't keep up don't sweat the details

Good article! I seldom post here; but trust me I read everything written on here with great interest, particularly your posts Grassfarmer. As it is my longterm goal to develop a composite breed of my own I was thrilled to see a brindled cow in one of your herd photos. My strain of cattle will be one of the few populations of cattle where all are brindles, my favourite colour in cattle and possibly a trademark for them if they ever should be popular.

Well thanks Tulip. Not sure what you are calling a brindle? - in my breed we would call this coloration on Dylan's cow brindle.



We have lots of what we would call roans in our breed although selection has been against this colour pattern in Canada. Rather like not trying to make white Angus - why not start by buying some roans?  

So I saw a roan cow and thought it to be a brindle. Dylan Biggs cow is what I mean by brindle too.

Tulip, I had a brindle Luing once upon a time - it was sub-fertile so i've never pursued the type. Indeed in Scotland you are not allowed to sell an animal with a black nose (typical of brindles) at the breed Association sale. Something about not being a recognized breed characteristic - although apparently the same rule doesn't apply to cattle with the double muscle gene.

Thanks Jon, We keep plodding along telling our simple tale and demand continues to outstrip supply. Less customers attracted by the novelty value of a new or different breed than a few years back, more customers attracted by our attempted methodology of breeding but probably most of all attracted by the pricing and the fact the bulls haven't been overfed. The common theme of prospective customers is dissatisfaction with their current cow herds - cows too big, not easy fleshing, lacking fertility and longevity and I've got to say the breed most are complaining about is the Angus.

Might have some bulls heading to North Dakota this summer if your immigration rules permit LOL.
