We just make cows...
so our cows can be the best cows...

After reading several bull sale advertisements the past month; I questioned why I was not buying bulls instead of selling bulls, because we cannot match the claims of those advertisements. But then we are reminded of genetic law, common sense, and even mathematical probability which says the more traits selected for, the slower the progress in any individual trait; and that even beneficial change has both a genetic and economic tradeoff. The sixteenth century gave rise to the universally applied aphorism “jack of all trades; master of none” and 250 years of cattle breeding has proven it`s application to genetics. In contrast, many commercial cattleman have shown a system of utilizing terminal and maternal types in complementarity crossbreeding programs to be a more profitable system of commercial production. Our breeding efforts have long been on mastering the cow side of the equation of such a system.

In a production oriented industry that tends to ignore costs, the female has long been relegated to secondary emphasis in cattle breeding even though her functional contribution and maintenance cost are the greatest economic factors in beef production. In a registered business driven by promoted change, we cannot out spend, out feed, out promote, out perform, or out shine the competition; but we have out lasted most all the “Jacks of all trades” pretending to make all the “jack” over the last 50 years by concentrating on commercial profitability instead of registered glory. Mastery of the cowherd is for the producer with a long term vision; and we welcome your call or visit... if you have aspirations of getting rich quick in the registered game, there are plenty others to help you out with that; be sure you know all the connotations of out.

Selling 35 yearling Model A bulls, and approximately 30 open Model A heifers; hope to see you on April 6, or anytime before to look and talk about...the cow.

with your lack of hair at a young age and not shaving now ...would bet clipping was never a top priority.

Larkota...wondering if less hair would make me as sexy as MK ?? or just lazier ?

There is a entire thread that can give you some ideas on clipping Mike. Ask Larkota I think he had one hell of a idea something about cooking oil and baby powder, and spray bottles. It sounded pretty good they warmed the oil up a bit before sprying it all over the rump! Call for details.

Now Tom. That was at least a 3 page discussion on ACS. You should take things more serious, that was pretty high tech to finally learn to pull shit out of hair, and still have a beautiful hair coat to hide the flaws. they did say that OILS WORK WELL. So the next time you have a need to remove Shit from hair, you know know where to go.

Since I have determined that this will be my last Auction Sale...instigated by me anyway, who knows what the bank or the damn government might do some day Rolling Eyes ...I want to get the statement carved in KC so I won`t be backing up . The bulls, for the purposes intended, are becoming pretty uniform, and worth pretty much the same...yet an auction seems primarily designed to highlight the individual, instead of the gene pool. When I was more busy, the auction let me get a lot done in one day...now I have more time; fewer bulls; fewer locals since I quit the welfare programs made eligible with "registration" ; more phone buyers, and I can get tired in just one day, etc; this auction is the last ...private treaty will let me state way in advance what the bulls are going to cost, so those wasting money at other sales might think " for that amount, I could have had a V8..NO, NO, two KA bulls Very Happy
so, since this is the last, I also want it to be the happiest; to match how I feel about it all... so hang on; got some pics today...I hope to end as obtruse to the mainstream as ever before Very Happy

Let`s fill Pen 1 with the lightest bulls; those with "less performance"...you know, those that are alive after birth Smile all born from 2 yr olds...
crank up a little music in honor of the sire of the first three bulls; Rocket Man; ...he`s heading out west this summer to breed out his days in cooler climates ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LX7WrHCaUA

let`s give them a name just for the auld lang syne effect...before they become known as KmA1922;2008; and 2168... so impersonal; this genetic business as opposed to the registered business Rolling Eyes

I started to name this 6309 son KA Sir David Copperfield, after the master of illusion... for everything appears just perfect here; even his dam, and his maternal sister; the bull even appears to talk Smile ...but we should know perfection is temporary, that it disappears into thin air just like a Copperfield tiger does at the whisk of a sheet...besides, I`ve have to clip him; wash the crap off his rear; and do all the other things any self-respecting bull or breeder should never have to endure...
so I just named him Joe...
for 38 years, my meek and stable best friend, applying the Golden Rule universally, without expecting even a mention for having done so...
Joe
Keeney Angus 2013 Spring Sale April 6, 2013 8da65525-ca6a-45dc-be1d-8ffe8d982067_zps8047baee

there`s another 6309 in this pen; 7604...I`ll plagarize a phrase of LL`s I`ve remembered since the days of Laurent..."he casts the same shadow as Joe"...but if we hold him to the scrutiny of light, he`s not quite as pretty...run them together, and I doubt anyone could decipher between the calves...but uniformity isn`t worth anything in the seedstock world, is it??
pretty sells...even if it requires make-up...I`ll bet you taking some of these clipped-up, make-up bulls home after a few days is like waking up with...awww, better not go there Smile

Rounding out this first pen of bulls will be the Unwanteds...for better or worse, depending on your wants, Unwanted is surely prepotent for type and characteristics...so much so, that I will make little attempt to photograph very many of the several in this pen...shpould have the pen sheets ready in a day or so...

trust me; these bulls are small...big enough I suspect to make 1100 lb + cows from the general cow population in KY...

below is Mighty Mite; a leftover bull from last fall; born at 60 lb; a closer bred version through Unwanted`s dam...just how many unwanted bulls can I afford to use? Smile

Pen 2 are a different , purposeful type...later maturing, athletic, virile; this years set better temperament than last years...they are about as obtruse to the current mainstream performance type as it gets... why? how about a yearling heifer that looks like a female instead of a Sherman tank?

Mike, Im a small partime farmer on the taylor/adair co. line. I purchased 10 bred heifers from Danny Wilkerson last year, all bred to a bull he purchased from u.. The hefiers started calving the 1st of feb, i`m so impressed with the ease of calving an there growth. Im in need of a good bull, Danny offered the same bull, but i need my own. I would like to visit before ur sale, when is a good time? Thanks, Steve

Danny has been using my bulls a long, long time...and no, he`s never bought a "top-seller"... Rolling Eyes

These are bulls in Pen 3; they were bred to be model A by an older Shoshone bull; but I`m terming them model B because of the growth, muscle, and frame they exhibit. I would not use them on heifers; but we have kept a few daughters by the sire, and have found them to be, what we expect these sons to sire...larger cows of a functional type, with good udders.

lot 14
Keeney Angus 2013 Spring Sale April 6, 2013 Sb14_zps0b4a8993

from a bigger, high producing cow that has had a calf every year; but crippled now at 14 years of age. Is having a calf every year meaningful as to this bull`s likelyhood of passing that fertility to his daughters? Kit Pharo says so...what genetic principle, rather than marketing, would enhance the possibility? I would discount it totally; except the only half sib to this cow in the herd has done the same...but from two cows; through one yearing bull, to that bull`s daughters? give me a friggin` break Exclamation

lot 39
Keeney Angus 2013 Spring Sale April 6, 2013 Sb39_zps5f031d73

so this bull is from a 12 year old, perfect udder cow that has had a calf every year as well; and damn good ones to boot...yes Brent, you got last years calf...this bull is limping; if they don`t stop fighting; he could be crippled by sale day...

lot 70
Keeney Angus 2013 Spring Sale April 6, 2013 Sb70_zpsf8dea5c8

and this bull is from the "never miss" 18 year old dam of Sniff the Wind...he has position one at the feed trough reserved ; usually by getting there first; if not, butt the winner out of his spot? does that kind of "performance" make him a materal candidate?
now to an 18 yr old cow...LL would give her a minus 18 on his longevity scale based on Old Grannie`s 36 years, but I would mutiply the 18 x .1 heritability, and find her only minus 1.8 years behind Old Grannie on her liklihood of producing daughters that last...or only plus .4 likely to add longevity greater than the crippled dam of lot 14...now if I had ten of ten daughters by a bull that lived to be 18 years old, that would mean the heritability would be increased, and that would take on some real meaning, eh?

oh hell, why not just buy them on whether you like their looks or not? because 19 times of 20, the next buyer is going to buy them that very way also... Smile

Unwanted sires some bulls that look like this one that weighed 675 lbs at weaning from a 3 year old...I remember the last time I saw a calf elsewhere somewhat like this he was promoted to be a legend until his progeny proved otherwise...I remember another Unwanted outlier like this calf that a buyer was all excited about; was even more excited when the birthweights were above average...isn`t it funny how often we think we can get more, and keep what we had?
I`m relegating this calf and a couple more like him to
Pen 4 status...certainly nice bulls; apply some caution if breeding heifers

also in Pen 4 are some bulls bred like Pen 2 that have lighter birthweights and haven`t grown as big as their sire group...they should be fine on heifers and look like the bull below...

Keeney Angus is about marketing a concept and the reality of cattle breeding...pretty blunt sometimes, to the point that when TomD
wrote he was using some KmA in his future plans, a customer thought Tom was using some KISS MY ASS... Smile
if you breed cattle very long outside the mainstream, you`ll find a need for those genes pretty often...
just to sure everyone "gets" it...my favorite poster again...

whatever gene pool breeders do,
they must do twice as well as the mainstream
to be thought half as good...
Luckily, this is not difficult...
cheers
